FROM REGAL TO RETRO, FROM VINTAGE TO VICTORIAN - THE WORLD OF ANTIQUES COMES TO CAPE TOWN

South Africa has a long tradition of antiquing based on our rich African, Dutch, French, German & British heritage and with the popularity of antique TV road shows, whether on century-old antiques or the more modern collectables, interest in collecting is at an all-time high.

A group of antique dealers, under the auspices of the National Antiques & Decorative Arts Association (NAADA), who run successful antique fairs at Nelson Mandela Square and Hyde Park Corner in Johannesburg and Brooklyn Square in Pretoria and who stage the biggest and most prestigious annual antiques fair in the country, are coming to Cape Town to present the National Cape Antique Fair taking place at The Great Cellar, Alphen Estate in Constantia from the 17 – 19th November 2017.

Both collectors and the public will be seduced by the variety of antiques, collectables and decorative arts that will be on show at The Great Cellar at Alphen Estate, the home of Stephan Welz Auctioneers, who have partnered with the Fair to hold daily valuations.  Benefiting from door takings will be the South African Riding for the Disabled Association (SARDA) whose work and recent struggles to keep going has made them our charity of choice.

It’s the place to find that statement piece that will be the talking point of your home, perhaps an impressive armoire for your new home or an antique side-board to fill that space in your lounge.  Add to your collection of silver, find a favourite porcelain figurine or a traditional tea set, pick up a unique piece of jewellery or simply find something special that catches your eye.

New and younger collectors will love trying on vintage clothing, find funky costume jewellery or see the latest in the steam punk trend that marries Victorian with Game of Thrones punk. More modern collectables such as Art Deco pieces, 20th Century furniture, 70’s retro and 60’s advertising billboards are the antiques of tomorrow and very sought after with new-age collectors.

Art will be showcased as part of the exquisite decor settings – with both contemporary and SA art masters for sale.  Dealers, who often pick up valuable art when scouring the country for antiques will have some key art pieces for sale -  such as a rare Picasso drawing, a Maud Sumner oil, a Tinus de Jonge or a Greg Boonzaier painting.

In these volatile economic times, alternate investments are a must for a balanced portfolio and coins and bank-notes are not only sound investments, they are also exempt from capital gains tax.

ANY IDEA WHAT YOUR ANTIQUES ARE WORTH?

How many of you have something tucked away in a cupboard that was given to you that you would dearly love to have valued.

• Now sure if that silver tea-set is solid silver or plate?

• Do you have some military items that could be of value?

• Is the porcelain collection left to you by your great aunt worth anything?

• Have you inherited some old coins and want to know what they are worth?

• That dusty painting that belonged to your great-aunt could well be a long-lost SA old masters.

• Even that 70’s designer bag you bought in Paris could be worth more than you paid for it.

Speculate no more....bring your valuable items to be appraised by experts from auctioneers Stephan Welz & Company ....you just might strike gold. Donations in aid of the South African Riding for the Disabled Association (SARDA).

An opening night cocktail event will take place from 6:30 for 7pm on Thursday 16th November – R100 per person - bookings essential
