Upper and Lower Levels of Nelson Mandela Square
Sunday 2nd February 2020
Anyone who has watched the BBC Road Show or the American Pawn Stars program will understand that collecting has become the trendy thing to do and once the collecting bug has bitten, there is very little a person can do. In fact a survey in the USA has shown that up to 94% of those surveyed owned at least a few antique or collectable items.
Antiques, collectables and decorative arts appeal not only to the wealthy who appreciate the finer things in life and who collect antiques as an investment but to the younger generation who are discovering the “new” collectables – anything from art deco ornaments to African art, 50’s vintage clothing to decorative arts. More and more people are enjoying the ‘green’ advantages of buying antiques that have been recycled with a low carbon footprint and that have intrinsic value and can be passed on for future generations to enjoy.
Johannesburg’s best kept secret is the Antiques & Collectables Fair which takes place on the Upper and Lower Levels of Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton on the first Sunday of every month. It’s up there with the likes of the top table-top fairs in London, Paris, New York and Buenos Aires – popular with all those who love to collect antiques and collectables – whether for pleasure or for investment!
As the country’s biggest and most prestigious monthly antiques fair, attracting over 40 antique dealers from all over the country who exhibit on the first Sunday of every month on the Upper and Lower Levels of Nelson Mandela Square, the Antiques Fair has become a fixture on the ‘what-to-do’ monthly calendar for locals and is also fast becoming a tourist attraction for out-of-towners and overseas visitors.
The dealers who exhibit at the Fair are an eclectic bunch of people who are committed to giving the very best in products and services. They are passionate about their trade and many are specialists in their fields. Whether you’re looking for a rare piece of silver, an unusual corkscrew, a map or rare book, or want to start a collection of porcelain, the dealers will give you all the advice, support and encouragement you need to become a devotee of antiques and collecting.
The first Antique Fair for 2020 takes place on Sunday 2nd February spread over both the Upper and Lower Levels of Nelson Mandela Square from 10h00
to 16h00 and is within walking distance of the Sandton Gautrain.
With Valentine’s Day around the corner, antiques and vintage items make the perfect gift, with their unique sense of history and highly individual appeal. Why not shop for an ‘eternity’ or ‘infinity’ ring for your loved, a piece of Art Deco costume jewellery or a collectable watch for him. Vintage Designer handbags are all the rage with fashionistas as are retro accessories or go the classic way with a beautiful antique silver photo frame or a unique glass perfume bottle.
